The Met Gala 2023
The Met Gala 2023 has just happened. What a stunning display of style and opulence. This annual event, for those who don’t know, is perhaps the most creative and over the top in the world of fashion. The Met Gala is alternatively known as the Met Ball, and was once called the Costume Institute Gala. It is an annual fundraiser, meant to raise money for the Costume Institute, a part of New York’s Metropolitan Museum Of Art. Celebrities from every industry gather each year to celebrate this stunning even and display their creativity and style. And being a charity event, it is always cause for wearing something striking. And sometimes it means wearing something that is, quite frankly, baffling. Here are our absolute favourite looks from the Met Gala, 2023.
Anna Wintour
Customarily, these lists start in alphabetical order. Anna Wintour would be, by most people’s measure, last on the list then. But we cannot bear to put such a titan of fashion at the very bottom of any list. We suppose it’ll have to be alphabetical by first name. Ms Wintour looks lovely here. She may very well be incapable of looking any other way. A white satin dress under a light and delicate green coat, covered in jewels shaped like cats. It is the picture of understated and “just so”, especially for an even as opulent as the Met Gala.
Billie Eilish
Billie Eilish is known for her devil may care demeanour, her “sad girl” pout. It suits her look here, with a very gothic all black look. The sheer materials, porcelain skin, piercing blue eyes, and Vaudevillian feel of this outfit is something quite arresting.
Sydney Sweeney
Sydney Sweeney is a natural beauty. She has that classic All-American look, an archetypal cheerleader or popular girl, but with heaps of sweetness and charm too. She makes use of her golden skin and equally golden hair and matches them with a rose gold dress. It is very summery and full of blush pink tones. This is what people mean when they say Hollywood starlet.
Naomi Campbell
Speaking of titans of fashion, is there a bigger one than Naomi Campbell? She has been a staple of style for over 30 years. And she has, naturally, shown us why at the Met Gala 2023. This is, like Ms Sweeney above, a rose or blush pink dress. It also features a swirling silvery addition too. that reminds us of bird feathers or sea shells. Ms Campbell stuns once again.
Kylie Jenner
Kylie Jenner appears seemingly at every fashion event and always steals the show. She is one of the Kardashian-Jenner clan, and has quickly distinguished herself as someone every bit as stylish and beautiful as her more senior sisters. Kylie Jenner has gone for a classic style here. This dress is a classic femme fatale looking number, popular throughout the Golden Age of Hollywood. It is timeless and thanks to the red it is also one of the most smouldering looks of the event.
Charlotte Tilbury
Charlotte Tilbury is one of the most successful moguls in the world of contemporary fashion. She is one of the most well known names in the world of cosmetics. And she has brought us the most stunning looks by bringing her make up to the faces of dozens of celebrities. Here, she brings it to us again, but on herself this time. But the rest of her outfit is what we are looking at most intently. This dress by Versace is a stunner. It is a lot like that classic dress, also Versace, worn by Jennifer Lopez in the 90s. It is a fine tribute to a head turner, and is head turning in its own right.
Jenna Ortega
Jenna Ortega has shot to fame most recently for her portrayal of Wednesday Addams in the new Netflix show Wednesday. She plays the iconic character in her schoolgirl years, and has decided to bring that look to the Met Gala 2023 too. The crisp white shirt and black bow, the pop socks, the patent leather shoes. It all have a gothic boarding school feel to it that suits Jenna Ortega’s demure expression.
Rihanna
This is more like it. We feel the impression you may have gotten of the Met Gala so far is one of stunning fashion. This is true, but it is the over-the-top nature that we would like to emphasise. Rihanna has done just that. Look at this dress and you will know what we mean. The meringue dress, as it is affectionately known, is alive and well in Rihanna’s wardrobe. But here, it has involved, and resembles an igloo as much as it does a pastry. It is beautiful and arresting nonetheless, with an all white and gentle floral look that is simply spectacular.
Gigi Hadid
What we mentioned above regarding Naomi Campbell is all true about Gigi Hadid. She is a veteran of the fashion world, only she is younger and belongs to the newer generation of super models. Yet look at this dress and you will see why she is most certainly deserving of the title. This dress is made up totally of sheers fabrics, except where it absolutely has to be otherwise. It is daring and bold and only someone as hauntingly beautiful as Gigi Hadid can pull it off. And she absolutely does too.
The Man Of The Met Gala 2023, Sean Combs (P Diddy/Puff Daddy/Diddy)
We are primarily a women’s fashion blog here at What I Wear. But we had to include one of the gentlemen that really caught our eye. Sean Combs was that one exception for us. He is better known by his stage name P Diddy, or depending on your age, Puff Daddy. Here, he channelled Count Dracula, the Duke Atreides, Bernard Cornwell’s Sharpe, Napoleon Bonaparte, and the Count of Monte Cristo, all simultaneously. What links all these character’s, fictional or otherwise? Most are aristocratic, and all are dramatic heroes (or villains) of fiction or history. Combined, they create a look that is stunning and baroque, and full of that traditional noble style of the High Middle Ages. This man stole the show, and we are very glad he did.
