Charnos was founded by Charles Noskwith in 1936 on Corporation Road, Ilkeston. They began with quality in mind first and foremost. Investing in the very best machinery of the day in order to make as many stockings and as high quality ones as possible. Charnos believed that they could only impress savvy and knowledgeable consumers if they made items that truly made people want to switch from what they were used to in favour of trying something new and falling in love with their new Charnos stockings and later Charnos hold ups. They produced some wonderful designs for the first few years, but as designers released newer innovations such as full length tights, Charnos saw the amazing new possibilities that were out there and decided to try them for themselves.
